In the canton of Ticino, hospitals, Spitex services and retirement homes will not be given a new common framework: Ticino voters rejected a popular initiative to this effect on Sunday. The redesign of Locarno railroad station was also narrowly defeated at the ballot box.

With a voter turnout of just over 31%, 30,329 voted in favor and 37,860 against the popular initiative "For high-quality social-health care and socio-educational services". The initiative was launched by two trade unions at the end of the coronavirus pandemic and aimed to create stronger framework conditions for hospitals, emergency services, retirement homes, Spitex services and other organizations.

The new legislation would have regulated the role of the canton and municipalities, the working conditions of staff and the rights of patients. The law also provided for the establishment of a parliamentary control commission for the entire sector.

The redesign of the Locarno transport hub was also narrowly defeated at the ballot box.
