The opponent of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is accused, among other things, of founding and leading a criminal organization as well as bribery and money laundering. In addition to Imamoglu, more than 400 other people have been charged.
Imamoglu was considered a promising challenger to Erdogan in the upcoming elections when he was arrested in March 2025 and removed as mayor of Istanbul. The Istanbul public prosecutor's office is demanding a total of more than 2,400 years in prison for Imamoglu. His CHP party has described the indictment as "political propaganda". Experts believe that the trial could last up to eight years.
