Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced countermeasures of the same magnitude due to the imminent introduction of new tariffs by the USA. Canada will introduce tariffs of 25 percent on US goods, Trudeau said at a press conference in the evening.

US President Donald Trump had previously announced that he would impose tariffs of 25 percent on imports from neighboring Canada and Mexico. Energy imports from Canada, on the other hand, are to be subject to a rate of 10 percent.

There is also a passage in the decrees stating that the tariffs could be increased or extended if the countries respond with retaliatory measures - such as counter-tariffs on goods from the USA. Customs duties are a kind of surcharge on imported goods. They are payable at the border.

Mexico also reacted immediately to the announcement. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum wrote on Platform X that she had instructed Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard to implement a plan that takes counter-tariffs into consideration.
