US President Donald Trump has once again held out the prospect of punitive tariffs on products from the European Union. Back in the White House, he followed up without being specific.

When asked in the White House whether he would introduce tariffs on EU goods, Trump said: "Absolutely." The Republican lamented: "We are treated so badly. They don't take our cars, they don't take our agricultural products, basically they take almost nothing." There is a huge trade deficit with the EU, he said. "So we're going to do something very significant with the European Union," he announced - but without giving any details.
It has long been a thorn in Trump's side that European companies sell significantly more goods in the USA than American companies in the EU. He had already announced far-reaching tariffs during the election campaign. Trump argues that US companies would then produce more in the USA again and that this would create jobs.
There had already been a fierce trade dispute between the US and the EU during Trump's first term in office. In 2018, the Republican introduced special tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, while the EU responded with special tariffs on US products such as bourbon whiskey, Harley-Davidson motorcycles and jeans.
