According to US President Donald Trump, terrorists have been killed in a US airstrike against positions of the terrorist organization Islamic State (IS) in Somalia. He had ordered the airstrikes, Trump wrote on Platform X. The caves in which the IS fighters lived were destroyed in the attacks and many terrorists were killed. According to the Pentagon, IS fighters in the Golis Mountains in the semi-autonomous region of Puntland in northern Somalia were the target of the strikes.

Trump spoke of a planner of attacks that the US military had long had in mind and a threat to the USA and its allies. The specific target of the attack remained unclear. The message to IS and other terrorist groups was: "We will find you and we will kill you."
Somalia has been fighting Islamists for a long time
In the Golis Mountains, there have been clashes in recent years between IS and the Al Shabaab terrorist militia for supremacy in the region. The country in the Horn of Africa has been fighting for years against the Islamists, who have carried out terrorist attacks both in Somalia itself and in neighboring countries.
According to Somali media reports, the security forces in the region launched an offensive against IS positions in January. In recent months, numerous fighters from the Middle East, particularly from Iraq and Syria, are said to have joined the Islamists in the Somali highlands.
US attacks in the past
In the past, there have been repeated US drone attacks against Islamist terrorists in Somalia. However, these have generally not been publicly highlighted.
