US President Donald Trump is expanding his tariff policy once again and now also wants to impose import surcharges on agricultural products. The tariffs on agricultural imports are to come into force on April 2, as Trump announced on Monday.

He did not provide any details on his online service Truth Social. However, the president called on farmers in the US to boost their production for the domestic market. "To the great farmers of the United States: Prepare to produce a lot of agricultural products to be sold within the United States," he wrote. "Tariffs will be imposed on outside products on April 2nd."

Trump had already announced tariffs of 25 percent on products from the EU last week, which are to apply to cars, among other things. From Tuesday, US tariffs are to be imposed on all imports from Mexico and Canada.

An additional tariff surcharge of ten percentage points is also to apply to Chinese imports from Tuesday.
