US President-elect Donald Trump has appointed Charles Kushner, the father of his son-in-law Jared Kushner, as US ambassador to France. Trump praised Kushner as an outstanding entrepreneur, philanthropist and businessman. Together they want to "strengthen America's partnership with France, our oldest and one of our most important allies", Trump wrote on Truth Social.

Trump will be sworn in for a second term on January 20. In his first term of office from 2017 to 2021, Trump already appointed family members to key positions, including his daughter Ivanka and son-in-law Jared Kushner as advisors.

Trump pardoned the real estate entrepreneur Charles Kushner shortly before the end of his first term in office. Kushner had spent two years in prison for tax evasion, among other things. He served his sentence, but his criminal record was subsequently expunged with the pardon.
