US President Donald Trump has blocked a question about some supporters' concerns about possible US military intervention in Iran. When a CNN reporter asked him about the rift among his supporters, he said of the channel: "Fake news, luckily nobody watches it."

He did not allow a substantive question, but interrupted the reporter and explained, annoyed, that his supporters were even more loyal to him today than when he won the election in November.

Trump was later asked about the topic again by another reporter in the White House. The President explained that he, too, did not want to be involved in a conflict in the Middle East - he had always made that clear. At the same time, however, he emphasized that Iran must not have a nuclear bomb.

Domestic political conflict potential for Trump

Due to the situation in the Middle East, Trump is caught between a traditional, pro-interventionist camp in his Republican Party, which includes senators such as Lindsey Graham and Ted Cruz, and an isolationist wing that calls for restraint in foreign policy.

Should he decide to actively support Israel in the war against Iran, this could lead to domestic political conflict for Trump. Many Americans are tired of war. Quite a few voted for the Republican precisely because he had promised during the election campaign to stay out of conflicts in order to focus more on the problems at home.

In recent days, some prominent voices from the right-wing camp have clearly positioned themselves against US military intervention in Iran.
