US President Donald Trump is not ruling out sending American soldiers to the Gaza Strip in order to take over and rebuild the destroyed coastal area.

"We will do what is necessary," he replied after a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Washington when asked by a journalist whether he would send US troops to the Gaza Strip to fill the security vacuum. "If it is necessary, we will do so." The Republican went on to say that he expected the USA to be involved in the region in the long term.

Earlier at the press conference, Trump had announced alongside Netanyahu that the United States would take control of the Gaza Strip and economically develop the war-ravaged Palestinian coastal region. Netanyahu supported Trump's proposal and expressed the hope that the move could change the Middle East and bring peace to the region. Islamist Hamas, which continues to be supported by many Palestinians and other Arab states, accused Trump of "racism" following his comments.
