The Republican qualified that the whole thing was still subject to final completion by the USA, Iran and other countries, he wrote on the Truth Social platform.
"The final aspects and details of the agreement are currently being discussed and will be announced shortly," he continued. As part of the agreement, Trump mentioned that the Strait of Hormuz would be opened.
Large telephone round with states in the region
Shortly beforehand, he had held "very good" talks on Iran with high-ranking representatives from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Pakistan, Turkey, Egypt, Jordan and Bahrain. According to Trump, these included Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Jordanian King Abdullah II, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
Trump went on to write that he had also spoken separately with Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on the phone.
Israel and the USA attacked Iran on February 28. A ceasefire has been in place in the war since the beginning of April, which was recently extended unilaterally by Trump. The ceasefire was repeatedly on the brink of collapse. Trump has repeatedly threatened to launch new, massive strikes on Iran if no acceptable agreement is reached with the Islamic Republic. It was only at the beginning of the week that he said he had canceled an attack on Iran that was supposedly planned for Tuesday, as there were serious negotiations.
US media had reported that mediators were working on a 14-point Memorandum of Understanding. The document is intended to create a framework for negotiations between the USA and Iran and formally end the war.
14-point memorandum as a first step
There had already been indications in the hours before Trump's announcement that progress was being made in the talks.
Tehran reported on Saturday evening (local time) that the framework agreement for the further course of talks between Iran and the USA was close to being finalized. "We are currently in the final phase of drafting a memorandum," said Foreign Office spokesman Ismail Baghai on state television. The memorandum would focus on ending the war, the Strait of Hormuz and the general release of blocked Iranian assets abroad.
According to Baghai, further details are to be negotiated within the next 30 to 60 days as part of a 14-point memorandum in order to reach a final agreement. These include the dispute over Iran's nuclear program as well as the technical process for lifting sanctions against Iran and the release of Iranian accounts abroad.
Mediator Pakistan with high-level meeting in Tehran
As part of the latest efforts, mediator Pakistan had sent its army chief Asim Munir to Tehran on Friday. "The intensive negotiations over the past 24 hours have resulted in encouraging progress towards a final agreement," a statement from the Pakistani military said on Saturday. Munir had ended a short but extremely productive visit to Iran.
