One of the two National Guardsmen shot in the US capital Washington has died, according to US President Donald Trump. "She was brutally attacked, she's dead," Trump said. The other victim, a man, is fighting for his life. Trump described the arrested suspect - an Afghan - as a "monster".

Crime occurred one day before an important US holiday

According to a representative of the Washington police, the 29-year-old alleged perpetrator fired at the two National Guardsmen near the Farragut West subway station, just a few blocks from the White House.

Other members of the National Guard heard the shots, intervened and overpowered the suspect, it was reported. The police arrived a few moments later. The incident had shocked the country on the eve of the American Thanksgiving holiday.

Authority: Alleged perpetrator came from Afghanistan

The acting prosecutor for the US capital, Jeanine Pirro, said that the alleged perpetrator lived with his wife and presumably five children in Bellington in the state of Washington on the west coast of the USA. The suspect had driven across the country to the capital in a vehicle. He had used a revolver in the crime. The motive for the crime is unclear.

Trump uses crime for tougher immigration policy

Trump classified the incident as an "act of terror" shortly after the crime and announced political consequences. The Republican said that all people from Afghanistan who had come to the USA under his Democratic predecessor Joe Biden should be checked.

The processing of immigration applications from Afghan citizens was suspended. Trump also ordered the deployment of around 500 additional National Guard soldiers to the capital. In an initial reaction, the US president described the shooter as an "animal" and declared that he would have to "pay the highest possible price".
