According to US President Donald Trump, there will be no new elections in Venezuela in the next 30 days.

"We have to get the country back in order first. You can't hold elections," he told US broadcaster NBC News.

Venezuela's government continues to regard the head of state Nicolás Maduro, who has been arrested by the USA, as the legitimate president. According to the constitution, in the event of the president's permanent absence, the vice president initially takes over and calls a new election within 30 days. However, it is unclear whether the new state leadership considers the current situation to be such a permanent absence.

The previous Vice President Delcy Rodríguez has since been sworn in as Acting President. The Supreme Court had already appointed her to temporarily assume the duties of the head of state at the weekend.

Over the weekend, the US military attacked targets in Venezuela and captured Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores. They were brought before a court in New York on Monday, where they are facing charges for alleged drug offenses.
