In the dispute over Greenland, US President Donald Trump has once again accused Denmark of not doing enough to counter the threat posed by Russia to the Arctic island. Nato has been warning Denmark about the "Russian threat" for two decades, Trump wrote on the Truth Social platform. "Unfortunately, Denmark has not been able to do anything about it. Now is the time, and it will be done!!!" Trump left open which specific steps he meant.

The US President has repeatedly made it clear that the USA wants to annex the island - something that the European NATO partners vehemently oppose. Trump had previously warned that Russia or China would otherwise take over the strategically important territory in the Arctic. Greenland is largely autonomous and is part of the territory of Nato member Denmark.

On Saturday, Trump announced punitive tariffs against Germany and other NATO countries. Among other things, he had taken offense at their joint military exploration mission on Greenland. Since then, Europe has been on a collision course with the United States. A special summit of European heads of state and government at the end of the week is also likely to discuss the billions in countermeasures available to the EU as a trade option.
