US President Donald Trump has reaffirmed his announcement that he will once again carry out nuclear weapons tests. In a video message on his Truth Social platform, the Republican said: "This process will begin immediately." Trump again cited the fact that other countries had test programs and would therefore test on the same basis.

The US President had already made exactly the same statement a week ago, causing a stir worldwide, especially as there has been a moratorium on testing nuclear weapons for decades. The USA carried out its last test in 1992.
On Wednesday, it became known that Russian President Vladimir Putin had instructed his government to examine the appropriateness of possible nuclear weapons tests. At a meeting of the Security Council, Putin instructed the Ministries of Defense and Foreign Affairs, the secret services and the civilian ministries to gather information for this purpose. This emerged from the Kremlin transcript of the meeting. The information should lead to proposals for possible preparations for nuclear weapons tests, Putin said.
Minister: USA does not want nuclear explosions
What exactly the USA wanted to test had initially remained open after Trump's original announcement. It was assumed that it would be more about testing launchers and other systems required for nuclear bombs. At the weekend, US Energy Secretary Chris Wright then made it clear that there were to be no nuclear explosions. "The tests we're talking about right now are system tests. They are not nuclear explosions." New weapons systems will be tested, Wright said. His ministry is responsible for many aspects of the nuclear arsenal.
In his new video message, Trump did not give any details, but only spoke in general terms about nuclear weapons tests.
Moscow threatens with new types of nuclear weapons
Russia had recently stepped up its nuclear threats. He also spoke of new types of weapons such as the nuclear-powered long-range missile Burevestnik and the nuclear-powered torpedo Poseidon. The information about the launchers caused less fear abroad than previous Kremlin threats.
