US President Donald Trump wants to relocate the headquarters of the US armed forces for space missions to the state of Alabama, thereby settling a long-standing debate. Former US President Joe Biden of the Democrats had established the Peterson Space Force base in the Democratic-run state of Colorado as the headquarters and declared this to be a temporary step.

Trump had already spoken out in favor of the Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville in Alabama, a Republican-governed state in the south of the USA, during his first term of office.

From now on, the city should be known as "Rocket City", Trump proposed. He promised the region 30,000 jobs. According to congressional figures, around 1,700 people currently work at the Colorado headquarters. Trump did not initially explain the difference.

"Space Command" is used for defense in space

Space Command is the eleventh command of the US military, which also includes commands for military activities in Europe and Africa or for cyber tasks.

Space Command is part of the US Armed Forces and reports to the Department of Defense. Its main tasks include monitoring objects in space using satellites, supporting other US armed forces such as the Air Force and the Navy and providing timely warning of missile attacks.

Trump announced the establishment of the Space Command at the end of 2018, combining various tasks from other military departments.
