"Cuba, by the way, will also fall very soon," he said in a telephone interview with US broadcaster CNN, as he praised the military successes of the United States in his second term in office.
Trump also claimed that Havana wanted an agreement - "and that's why I'm going to send (Secretary of State) Marco (Rubio) there, and we'll see how that goes."
Not the first assertion by Trump
The president's comments are not new. Back at the end of January, he said: "Cuba is truly a nation on the brink of failure." The Caribbean state had received its money and oil from Venezuela - this is no longer possible after the US intervention. US forces had taken control of several oil tankers. Trump had previously announced that he would impose a "total and complete blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers traveling to and from Venezuela".
Trump has also announced a "peaceful takeover" of Cuba in the past. However, neither the annexation nor the failure of the country have yet materialized, with or without US involvement.
Relations between Havana and Washington have been tense for decades. The authoritarian-ruled Caribbean island is currently experiencing its worst economic crisis since Fidel Castro's revolution in 1959. Among other things, there is a lack of fuel. If the USA were to permanently cut off oil supplies from Venezuela, the Cuban economy could collapse completely.
