Trump's defense argued with the words of US President Joe Biden, of all people, who had justified the pardon of his son Hunter with "unjust" and politically motivated treatment by the judiciary.
It was precisely this "kind of political theater" that Trump had also fallen victim to, according to the motion. The lawyers also argued that the guilty verdict against their client would disrupt the transfer of power in the USA and run counter to his immunity as future president. The public prosecutor's office in New York now has until next Monday to respond. Judge Juan Merchan will then decide how to proceed.
A jury in New York found Trump guilty on 34 charges at the end of May. The trial concerned the illegal concealment of 130,000 dollars in hush money payments to a porn actress in order to gain advantages during the 2016 election campaign. It was the first time in the history of the United States that a former president was convicted of a criminal offense. If the conviction stands, Trump will also be the first US president to govern as a convicted felon.
