US President Donald Trump has spoken out in favor of elections in Ukraine. In an interview with the news portal "Politico", Trump said in response to the question of whether the time had come for elections: "Yes, I think it's time. I think it's an important time to hold elections."

The Ukrainian people should have the opportunity to decide - and it is possible that the current President Volodymyr Zelensky would win the vote. Trump said that there had been no elections in the country, which has been under attack from Russia for almost four years, for a "long time". The war was being used as an excuse not to hold elections, the US president claimed. "They talk about a democracy, but at some point it's no longer a democracy."

Trump had already criticized Zelensky shortly after taking office and called him a "dictator". He claimed at the time that the Ukrainian president would only receive four percent in new elections. Kiev has always rejected the call for new elections, which Moscow has also made several times, by referring to martial law. Although Zelensky's term of office would have regularly expired last year, elections are suspended during the war.

Trump also reiterated his criticism of Zelensky. "He must finally pull himself together and accept things," the 79-year-old replied when asked about a possible deadline for agreeing to the US peace plan currently under discussion.
