US President Donald Trump is not ruling out a third term in office - even though the constitution only allows a maximum of two. Many of his supporters want him to do it, Trump said in a phone call with NBC News. But he told them that "we still have a long way to go, it's still very early in the administration". When asked specifically whether he would seek another term in office, the president replied, according to NBC: "I like working." And added when asked, "I'm not kidding."

When asked if he had been presented with plans that would allow him to run for a third term, Trump said: "There are methods by which you could do that." He also did not rule out the scenario of his running mate J.D. Vance running for president and then making way for Trump. That's one method, Trump replied, according to NBC, adding, "But there are others."

The 22nd Amendment to the Constitution stipulates that no one may be elected US president more than twice. However, Trump has already flirted with staying in office longer several times in recent months.

The opposition Democrats also fear that the Republican could try to interpret the constitution differently in order to remain in power for longer. Legal experts have also already run through theories as to how Trump could try this.
