USA Trump tackles dismantling of US Department of Education
US President Donald Trump has signed a decree to dismantle the Department of Education. It is the beginning of his efforts to eliminate the department "once and for all", the Republican said during a ceremony at the White House.

The decree instructs Education Secretary Linda McMahon to take all necessary steps to reduce the department's functions to a minimum. Congressional approval would be required to abolish the department completely.
The department should only have minimal functions such as awarding scholarships and certain financial aid, White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt had previously stated. Trump now said that corresponding programs should be distributed to other agencies and that they would take care of them "very well".
Just over a week ago, the government had laid off almost half of the department's staff.
