US President Donald Trump has threatened Nigeria's government with military strikes in the West African country. The reason he gave was that Islamist terrorists were killing Christians there.

He is currently instructing the Pentagon to prepare for a possible deployment, the Republican wrote on the Truth Social platform. Nigeria's President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had previously emphasized on the X platform: "Nigeria rejects religious persecution and does not promote it."

Trump went on to write that if the Nigerian government continued to allow this killing, the USA would immediately stop all aid to the country. And they would come to the "disgraced" country to eradicate the Islamist terrorists committing these atrocities. If an attack is launched, it will be swift and brutal. Trump concluded by writing: "WARNING: THE NIGERIAN GOVERNMENT SHOULD DO BETTER!"

Trump: Save all Christians in the world

The day before, the US president had already written in another post on Truth Social that Christianity in Nigeria was facing an existential threat. He claimed that thousands of Christians had been killed. He said they were ready to save all Christians in the world. The USA classified Nigeria as a country in which particularly serious violations of religious freedom occur (Country of Particular Concern). China and Russia, for example, are also on this US list.

Nigeria's President Tinubu rejected this. Characterizing Nigeria as religiously intolerant does not reflect the reality in the country and does not take into account the government's efforts to protect the freedom of religion and belief of all Nigerians.

He further wrote that the government is committed to working with the US government and the international community to deepen understanding and cooperation in the protection of faith communities.
