US President Donald Trump has said that he has convinced Russia and Ukraine to agree to a three-day ceasefire starting tomorrow. This will include the suspension of all hostilities and the exchange of 1,000 prisoners on each side, Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform. The request was made directly by him. He was very grateful to Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Selensky for agreeing, Trump wrote.

"Hopefully this is the beginning of the end of a very long, deadly and hard-fought war." Talks to end the war - "the biggest since the Second World War" - were continuing. Every day we are getting closer to the goal, said Trump. In fact, there has recently been a lack of visible progress in the negotiations.

Selensky confirms agreement

Selensky confirmed the agreement and thanked Trump for his diplomatic efforts. Russia had agreed to the prisoner exchange, he wrote on the X portal. "A ceasefire regime must be established for May 9, 10 and 11," he said. He had instructed his team to prepare everything for this. Ukraine wants to bring its prisoners home.

A ceasefire had already been in place since Friday for Victory Day in Russia on Saturday, which Moscow had declared unilaterally. Despite this, the Russian army continued to attack so often, according to the Ukrainian account, that Kiev has so far had no reason to silence its weapons, according to Selenskyj.

Putin's foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov confirmed the ceasefire, according to the Russian state news agency Tass. He said that the agreement had been reached in recent telephone contacts with the US leadership. "For their part, the US representatives were in contact with Kiev." In Moscow, the traditional military parade in front of Putin on Red Square is due to take place on Saturday.

On Thursday, the Secretary of Ukraine's National Security Council, Rustem Umyerov, met with US representatives. According to Zelenskyi, the meeting was about agreements on security guarantees and humanitarian issues such as the exchange of prisoners of war.

Following talks in the USA, Kiev is expecting Trump's envoys in the coming weeks. Zelenskyi said that the visit would take place between now and the beginning of the summer and that arrangements were currently being made, he wrote on social media.

Ukraine has been defending itself against the Russian invasion for more than four years. Most recently, the USA mediated in direct talks between Kiev and Moscow. However, the negotiations were recently put on ice, partly because the USA is distracted by the Iran war.
