US President Donald Trump has once again caused offense with a statement about Ukraine. In an interview with Fox News, Trump was asked whether he was comfortable with the fact that he had stopped aid to the country and that Ukraine might not survive. The Republican replied: "Well, it may not survive anyway."

With regard to Russia's war of aggression against its neighbor, Trump went on to say that there are always two sides to a conflict. "And now we're in this mess."
Under Trump, the US government made a radical U-turn in its Ukraine policy and recently stopped supporting Kiev altogether - at least for the time being. The reason given by the White House was to force Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi into peace negotiations.
Trump had previously blamed Zelenskyi for the war of aggression ordered by Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin and accused him of not wanting to end the war. Trump also called the Ukrainian president a "dictator". There was a serious scandal between the two during a meeting at the White House in front of the world public.
Tough on Russia?
There has recently been a rapprochement between Trump and Zelensky, but US aid for Ukraine is still on hold. And overall, the US President has recently been conspicuously defending Russia's position in the conflict. However, Trump is defending himself against accusations that he is unilaterally siding with Moscow.
"I think I'm very tough on Russia - tougher than anybody has ever been on Russia," Trump claimed in the interview with Fox News. Among other things, he cited his opposition to the Nord Stream 2 natural gas pipeline between Russia and Germany during his first term in office (2017 to 2021). The underwater pipeline was completed in 2021 but never went into commercial operation.
