US President Donald Trump wants to appear on the streets of the capital Washington with the military. Radio host Todd Starnes reported on X that Trump had told him in an interview "that he will be patrolling with Washington D.C. law enforcement and the military tonight".

Trump said in the interview, according to the ultra-conservative US station Newsmax, for which Starnes works as an anchor, "I'm going out with the police and the military."

A White House spokesman told Newsmax that the action would be accompanied by security precautions. Details were yet to be announced.

Trump's recent activation of the National Guard to curb allegedly out-of-control crime in the US capital is highly controversial. He also placed the local police force under federal control. Police statistics and information from the public prosecutor's office in the capital district do not provide any evidence of an increase in crime.

There have already been protests. In the cityscape, National Guardsmen can increasingly be seen in places where tourists, among others, are out and about, but which are not a particular hotspot for violence and crime.
