"Hunter Biden has been protected by the Secret Service, paid for by the taxpayers of the United States, for quite some time," Trump wrote on his online mouthpiece Truth Social. This protection for the 55-year-old will be withdrawn with immediate effect. Ashley Biden, 43, will also no longer receive protection from the Secret Service.
The Secret Service is responsible for protecting high-ranking politicians and not only looks after the security of active office holders, but also that of some former office holders or their relatives. After taking office, Trump withdrew protection from various people - such as his former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and his former adviser John Bolton.
No automatic protection for adult children
Trump had previously been asked at an appointment at the Kennedy Center that Hunter Biden was on vacation in South Africa accompanied by the Secret Service. "I'm hearing that for the first time," said Trump and announced that he would take a closer look. Trump now criticized this in his post on Truth Social. According to Trump, 18 agents are responsible for protecting Hunter Biden and 13 for Ashley Biden.
According to US media, Biden ordered protection for his two children until the summer before leaving the White House. Ex-presidents and their partners are automatically entitled to this protection for life, while children are only entitled to it until the age of 16. After leaving the White House in 2021, Trump also ordered that his four adult children be protected by the Secret Service for a further few months.
