The former National Security Advisor to US President Donald Trump, John Bolton, advises Europe to play a stronger role in the conflict with Iran. "Iran is closer to Europe than to the USA", Bolton said in an interview with the Augsburger Allgemeine newspaper (Monday). In addition, Iran's missiles apparently reach further than expected and could reach almost all of Europe. The continent is also affected economically due to the rise in oil prices. In addition, Europe is repeatedly the target of Iranian-controlled terrorist attacks.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) had criticized the attack by Israel and the USA on Iran and said: "Germany is not part of this war, and we don't want to be." Bolton said: "Europe should take a deep breath when it comes to its reaction to Trump and ask itself: What is best for us?" The national interests of the Americans and Europeans are closely aligned here.

The former diplomat added: "If the Europeans say Iran is not our war, then that allows Trump to say, well, Ukraine is not America's war." This would only help Russia's head of state Vladimir Putin.

Bolton was National Security Advisor under Trump in 2018/2019. He resigned in a dispute with the president and became one of his fiercest critics.
