The 25% tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports announced by US President Donald Trump came into force on Wednesday night. An order signed by the Republican a few weeks ago is now in force.

This also suspends previously applicable exemptions for goods from European Union (EU) countries and other states.

The tariffs now introduced by the US government are the first punitive measures to come into force since the start of Trump's second term in office that directly target the EU. However, the US sources its steel and aluminum primarily from Canada - but the EU is also a source of the metals.
