According to Turkish sources, the aircraft was a C130 transport plane that had taken off from Azerbaijan and was headed for Turkey. Images purporting to show the incident have been circulating on social media. They show an aircraft plummeting vertically to the ground at high speed. The footage cannot be verified. Georgian and Turkish search and rescue teams had been dispatched to the region, according to Anadolu.
The Georgian Interior Ministry told the Russian news agency Tass that the plane had crashed in a Georgian district about five kilometers from the border. The crash is being investigated for violations of aviation safety or operating regulations, it added.
