The plane had taken off from Azerbaijan with destination Turkey. Rescue work had been initiated. Nothing was initially known about the cause of the accident or the crew.

The Georgian Interior Ministry told the Russian news agency Tass that the plane had crashed in a Georgian district around five kilometers from the border. The crash is being investigated for violations of aviation safety or operating regulations.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed his regret. He said that attempts were being made to reach the scene of the accident. The president reportedly spoke on the phone with his Azerbaijani counterpart Ilham Aliyev.
