The attack was carried out with so-called kamikaze drones, one of which hit the factory in Kotovsk in the Russian region of Tambov, a source in the Ukrainian defense sector told the AFP news agency on Thursday. The factory, which belongs to a military-industrial complex, is around 350 kilometers from the Ukrainian border.

The damage caused by the explosives-laden drone and the extent of the enemy's losses are still being investigated, it added. A Russian media outlet published alleged video footage of the attack, the authenticity of which AFP was unable to verify.

The governor of Tambov, Maxim Egorov, had previously stated on the online service Telegram that two drones had been spotted and destroyed in the region in the early morning. There were no casualties or damage.

The source in the Ukrainian defense sector said that the factory in question produced ammunition and gunpowder for small arms. Drone attacks had already been carried out on it in January 2024 and November 2023.

In recent months, Ukraine has also claimed responsibility for a series of attacks on Russian refineries and oil storage facilities - not only in areas close to the border, but also hundreds of kilometers from the Ukrainian border.

For its part, the Russian army is systematically firing on Ukraine's energy infrastructure. This repeatedly leads to power cuts in Ukraine.

According to the Ukrainian head of state, Volodymyr Selensky, the Russian attacks have halved Ukraine's energy production capacity compared to a year ago. The president is therefore appealing to his country's Western partners to supply Ukraine with more air defense systems.
