Russia and Ukraine have continued their drone attacks ahead of the announced ceasefire for the Orthodox Easter celebrations. According to Ukrainian authorities, at least two people were killed in Odessa on the Black Sea. According to the public prosecutor's office, the dead were a 38-year-old woman and a 32-year-old man. There were also injuries and damage to numerous residential buildings and a kindergarten, according to the city's administration.
The city of Sumy in the north-east of Ukraine reported at least 17 people injured following Russian attacks, as well as damage to residential buildings, a kindergarten and numerous cars. The Ukrainian air defense reported a total of 160 Russian drone attacks.
The Russian Ministry of Defense reported 99 Ukrainian drones shot down in the morning. The ministry did not provide any information on hits or damage.
The authorities in the southern Russian region of Krasnodar announced that debris from a downed drone had caused a fire on the site of an oil industry plant in the city of Krymsk. The fire has been extinguished, it said. Ukraine wants to damage Moscow's war economy with these counter-attacks on Russian energy facilities.
A 32-hour ceasefire is due to begin this afternoon at 16:00 (15:00 CEST) in Ukraine and Russia. Russian President Vladimir Putin is waging his war of aggression against Ukraine for the fifth year. According to his own statements, he has scheduled the ceasefire until midnight on Sunday so that Ukrainians and Russians can celebrate Orthodox Easter in peace. The Kremlin spoke of a humanitarian gesture.
Ukraine, which has long called for an Easter truce, agreed. During a ceasefire at Easter last year, which was also ordered by Putin, both warring parties reported numerous violations. This time too, Moscow and Kiev have announced that they will respond to attacks by their opponents.
