Due to the constant threat of Russian shelling, the authorities in the north-eastern region of Sumy have issued a mandatory evacuation order for a further eleven locations. A corresponding order was signed by the military governor of the region, Oleh Hryhorov, as he announced on Facebook. More than 2,800 people are affected by the measure. A total of 213 settlements in the border region have already been ordered to be evacuated.

Russia wants to establish a so-called security zone along the border on Ukrainian territory in the Sumy region, ostensibly to protect its own civilian population from Ukrainian attacks. Last August, Ukrainian troops from the Sumy region unexpectedly began an advance into the neighboring western Russian region of Kursk. After months of fighting, the Ukrainian units were largely forced to retreat and Russian troops advanced into Ukrainian territory.

Ukraine has been defending itself against a Russian invasion for more than three years.
