According to Ukraine, it has successfully intercepted a Russian glide bomb in the southern Ukrainian region of Zaporizhia. This was confirmed by the Ukrainian air force spokesman, Yuri Ihnat, to the Interfax-Ukraine news agency.

He did not give any more specific details about the weapon used. Military bloggers had previously speculated about the use of an experimental weapon.

Overall, a "complex approach" of ground-based air defense and airborne means is necessary to keep the Russian fighter jets armed with glide bombs away, said Ihnat. It had already been possible to intercept these dangerous bombs in time on several occasions.

Ukraine has been defending itself against a Russian invasion for almost three years. The Russian air force relies heavily on glide bombs, which are dropped from high altitudes outside the range of Ukrainian air defenses and glide into the target area, sometimes with large deviations, when equipped with wings. Just over 30 kilometers from the Russian-Ukrainian front line, the large city of Zaporizhzhya is particularly affected by Russian attacks using this type of weapon.
