The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has approved a four-year loan of around 8.1 billion US dollars for Ukraine, which is under attack from Russia.

Of this, 1.5 billion will be disbursed immediately, as the IMF announced. This is part of an international support package for Ukraine amounting to 136.5 billion US dollars.

The funds will be used to finance the budget deficit and ensure the stability of the financial system, Kiev Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko wrote on social media. She also confirmed a pension increase of 12.1 percent on March 1 for the approximately ten million senior citizens in the country.

In the fifth year of war and against the backdrop of Russian attacks on the energy infrastructure, it is important for Ukraine to have guaranteed international financial support from its partners and resources for the stable operation of the state.

Ukraine has been defending itself against a Russian invasion for just over four years with Western help. According to IMF statistics, the Eastern European state was already the poorest country in Europe before the Russian attack in 2022. Foreign supporter states pay a large part of the state budget.
