According to various sides, the talks in the USA on a peace solution for the war in Ukraine have progressed positively, without details or concrete progress being announced. Delegations or negotiators from all sides - from the USA, Russia and Ukraine to the Europeans - took part in the talks in Miami in the US state of Florida, which were to last the entire weekend in varying constellations.

The main aim was for the American negotiators to feed back the results of the latest talks with Russian representatives last Sunday and Monday in Berlin. Günter Sautter, foreign policy advisor to Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU), flew to Florida on behalf of Germany to hold talks with representatives of the USA and Ukraine.

Nothing was initially revealed about the content of the talks. According to dpa information, there were no talks with the Russian side. Sautter traveled back to Germany on Saturday.

Russian negotiator finds talks "constructive"

According to Russian negotiator Kirill Dmitriev, the talks were satisfactory. "The discussions are being held constructively," the adviser to Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin told reporters, according to the Russian state agency Tass. Special envoy Steve Witkoff and the son-in-law of President Donald Trump, Jared Kushner, are taking part in the talks in Miami from the US side.

The meeting marks the next round of negotiations after almost four years of the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine. "We are working constructively and objectively, we expect further progress and practical results," wrote the Secretary of the National Security Council of Ukraine, Rustem Umyerev, on Telegram. Together with Chief of the General Staff Andriy Hnatov, he wanted to meet with American negotiators. Experts continue to expect a lengthy process.

Following talks between a Ukrainian delegation and the US side, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi spoke out in favor of a new meeting with the Europeans. He wrote on social media after talks with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre that there was agreement that Ukraine should consult with its European partners in a wider circle following the work of its diplomatic team in the USA. The Ukrainian delegation in Florida had worked together with the US side and progress was being made quickly.

Putin wants to meet Macron

Meanwhile, Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin is ready for bilateral talks with French President Emmanuel Macron. According to the Russian state news agency Ria Novosti, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Pekov said that Putin had also expressed his willingness to engage in dialog with Macron. If there is mutual political will, this can only be seen as positive, he said.

Macron had said on Friday that it could be useful for Europe and Ukraine to talk to Putin again in order to be directly involved in the discussion. "Otherwise, we are discussing among ourselves with negotiators who will discuss with the Russians alone. That is not ideal."

The head of Nato praises Trump's efforts

Nato Secretary General Mark Rutte praised US President Donald Trump's efforts to end Russia's war against Ukraine in particular. "Trump is absolutely committed to this issue. He is focused on ending this war," the Nato chief told Bild am Sonntag. Trump was the only one who had been able to bring Kremlin boss Putin to the negotiating table - and the only one who could ultimately force Putin to reach a peace agreement: "I pay him great respect for that.

Rutte also addressed fears that the USA could stop supporting Ukraine. "I do not expect that at all. What we are seeing at the moment is that the exchange of information and the supply of weapons to Ukraine are continuing," he said.
