According to his foreign minister, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi is prepared to negotiate directly with Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin on sensitive issues with a view to ending the Russian war of aggression.
In an interview with the Ukrainian portal "Jewropejska Prawda", chief diplomat Andrij Sybiha said that the most sensitive issues in the struggle for a peace solution had not yet been clarified. Sybiha said that territorial issues and the Russian-occupied nuclear power plant in Zaporizhia were at stake and that Zelenskyi was prepared to meet with Putin to clarify these issues.
Russia is demanding territorial concessions from Ukraine for a ceasefire, in particular a withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from the Donetsk and Luhansk regions. The Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant is the largest in Europe and has been occupied by Russian troops since March 2022 - shortly after the start of the war.
Zelensky had already called for a meeting with the Russian head of state several times in the past, but Moscow always put the brakes on. Last weekend, negotiators from Ukraine and Russia met directly for the first time in months in the United Arab Emirates under the mediation of the USA. The talks are set to continue next Sunday in Abu Dhabi.
