These had been repulsed, it said, although this could not be independently confirmed. According to the report, there were battles for many villages that are on the way for the Russians to Pokrovsk, which is still around ten kilometers away. Russian military bloggers reported that their troops were advancing.
The industrial and mining town of Pokrovsk in the Donetsk region had around 65,000 inhabitants before the war and is important for supplying the Ukrainian troops on this section of the front. Commander-in-Chief Olexander Syrskyj acknowledged the difficult situation. On the Russian side, the Ukrainian defense near Pokrovsk was said to be faltering. According to Ukrainian military sources, there were also fierce battles further north near Torezk.
Ukraine advances in Kursk region
In the Russian region of Kursk, on the other hand, Ukrainian troops continued to advance during their offensive, according to observers. The US Institute for the Study of War (ISW) cited photos from the region as evidence that the Ukrainians are fighting their way closer to the district town of Korenyevo. From the town of Sudzha, which fell into Ukrainian hands right at the beginning of the offensive, the advance to the east is continuing.
After almost two and a half years of repelling the Russian invasion, Ukraine has for the first time moved ground fighting onto the enemy's territory with the advance into the Russian region of Kursk. Russia is gradually bringing in troops to defend the area. However, this does not appear to be at the expense of Russian attacks in the Donetsk region, as the Ukrainian leadership may have hoped.
