Ukraine and Russia have exchanged a second group of prisoners of war in accordance with the Istanbul agreements. This group consists of seriously ill and seriously injured soldiers from Russian captivity, as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wrote on Telegram. All of them will receive immediate medical assistance. Among those exchanged were members of the army, the National Guard, border guards and transport services. Selensky announced that the exchanges would continue.

The Russian Ministry of Defense confirmed the exchange on the Belarusian-Ukrainian border. The Russian soldiers will be brought to Russia after a medical examination. Neither side provided any information about the number of prisoners of war exchanged.

Prisoners of war had already been exchanged the day before. Selenskyj had initially written that these returnees also included seriously injured soldiers. However, the Ukrainian staff for prisoner of war issues later clarified that only soldiers under the age of 25 had been released in this first exchange.

Result of direct negotiations

Last week Monday, the Russians and Ukrainians agreed to the return of at least 1,000 prisoners each during negotiations in Istanbul (Turkey). Several thousand bodies of fallen soldiers are also to be handed over to the other side.

Ukraine has been defending itself against Russia's invasion for more than three years.
