Due to massive cuts in funding, the UN has announced that it will drastically reduce its humanitarian aid worldwide. In an "extremely urgent" appeal, the organization is now asking for 23.5 billion Swiss francs in funding.

In December, the UN's head of humanitarian affairs, Tom Fletcher, had asked for 38.2 billion Swiss francs. According to the United Nations Office for Humanitarian Affairs, the new appeal focuses on some more urgent construction sites, but does not replace the appeal from a few months ago.

This is not just a call for money, but a "call for global responsibility, human solidarity and a commitment to end suffering," Fletcher said.

Only 4.5 billion had been received from the December appeal, which itself had already been revised downwards by 2.4 billion. The United Nations wanted to help over 170 million of the most vulnerable people in 70 countries. The figure will now be well below 120 million.
