The emergency session of the UN Human Rights Council has begun in Geneva to address the devastating conditions in the Sudanese city of Al-Fashir. While diplomats in Geneva condemned violence and human rights violations, murder, torture, rape and executions continued in the large city sealed off by RSF militias. The High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, said that the people, who had been cut off from all aid for months, had to eat animal feed and peanut shells to survive.

Germany had requested the emergency meeting together with other countries. "As a clear signal: Enough is enough!" said the German ambassador in Geneva, Antje Leendertse. "The fighting must stop immediately, help must get in and the perpetrators must be held accountable."
World community fails
Those involved in the power struggle in Sudan must be held accountable, Türk demanded, but he also accused the international community of failing. It had failed to protect the people despite numerous warnings. "The pools of blood in Al-Fashir were photographed from space. The stain on the vest of the international community is less visible, but no less condemnable," he said. Türk called on all countries with influence in Sudan to ensure an end to the violence.
"There is a proxy war going on in Sudan over its natural resources and raw materials," said Türk. "Numerous countries in the region and beyond are involved. (...) The international community must take action against the individuals and companies fueling and profiting from this war."
