UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher has strongly denounced Israel's blockade of the Gaza Strip. "Israel is deliberately and shamelessly creating inhumane conditions for the civilian population in the occupied Palestinian territories," Fletcher told the UN Security Council at a meeting in New York. Because humanitarian aid is being withheld, 2.1 million Palestinians in the Gaza Strip are at risk of starvation, he said.

"What evidence do you need now?" Fletcher asked the most powerful UN body. "Will you act decisively to prevent genocide and ensure compliance with international humanitarian law? Or will you instead say: 'We did everything we could'?"
