The UN Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, is "deeply concerned" by the fierce fighting and reports of massacres of civilians. In a statement, he called on all sides to refrain from actions "that could further inflame tensions" and destabilize the country. The protection of the civilian population must be upheld in accordance with international law, Pedersen demanded.

Around three months after the fall of long-term ruler Bashar al-Assad, heavy fighting broke out between supporters of the ousted government and the new rulers.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, more than 160 civilians are said to have been executed by fighters on the side of the new transitional government. The victims are said to be members of the Alawite minority, to which ex-President al-Assad also belongs. Interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa addressed the population on Friday evening. Remnants of the ousted ex-government had tried to "test the new Syria". Anyone who commits attacks against civilians will be punished.
