According to UN Secretary-General António Guterres, he has credible information that Israeli security forces have allegedly committed sexual violence against Palestinian prisoners. The allegations, which Guterres made in a letter to UN Ambassador Danny Danon, relate to incidents in several prisons, a detention center and a military base. Danon rejected the allegations on Platform X.

Guterres wrote in the letter, which precedes the upcoming publication of the annual UN report on sexualized violence, that it had been difficult to gather evidence because UN observers had been denied access to the buildings in question. "I urge the Israeli government to take the necessary measures to ensure the immediate cessation of all acts of sexual violence," Guterres wrote.

Among other things, clear orders against sexual violence, investigations into all credible allegations, free access for UN staff and the appointment of persons responsible for implementing appropriate measures are needed, Guterres said.

UN Ambassador Danon, who had published the internal letter, criticized Guterres, saying that the Secretary-General had once again "relied on unfounded accusations based on tendentious publications". The UN should focus on "the shocking war crimes committed by Hamas" and the "immediate release of all hostages". Israel will continue to protect its citizens and act in accordance with international law.
