According to a report by the UN Human Rights Office, both sides in the power struggle in Sudan are committing serious crimes. Both the army and the rebels of the RSF militia have committed mass executions and gang rapes, according to the report.

Particularly worrying are the growing calls for hatred and violence, which are being used to fuel ethnic tensions. Fighters on both sides have murdered people and raped women on the basis of ethnicity.

"The situation has reached a tipping point," said Li Fung, head of the UN Human Rights Office in Sudan. Millions of people were living in fear and terror as they fled from fighters. People needed more help.

Tens of thousands of people have died in the power struggle

The UN emergency aid office OCHA has published an appeal for donations worth six billion dollars (5.7 billion euros) for Sudan. "Sudan is facing a humanitarian emergency of shocking proportions," said OCHA head Tom Fletcher. "Our plan is a lifeline for millions."

According to the UN Human Rights Office, foreign countries are fueling the conflict by supplying weapons. There is a ban on the supply of arms to the Darfur region, but this is repeatedly violated. These deliveries must be stopped and the embargo should ideally be extended to the entire country.

According to estimates, tens of thousands of people have died in the power struggle between the government and the rebels that broke out in April 2023. Around twelve million people have been displaced in the country or have fled across the borders.
