A convoy of the UN Observer Mission in Lebanon (Unifil) has reportedly been attacked. The blue helmets were on their way to the airport in the capital Beirut when their convoy was attacked in the evening, according to a statement. One of the vehicles caught fire. The outgoing deputy commander was injured. "We demand a comprehensive and immediate investigation by the Lebanese authorities," it said. All perpetrators must be brought to justice.

"Attacks on peacekeepers are blatant violations of international law and may constitute war crimes", the statement continued. The blue helmets continued to work in accordance with their UN mandate to "restore security and stability in southern Lebanon".

Israel and Lebanon had agreed on a ceasefire between Israel's army and the Hezbollah militia at the end of November. The agreement, which was reached after months of mutual shelling, was extended in January until February 18.
