Following the fall of ruler Bashar al-Assad, the UN Security Council will discuss the situation in Syria behind closed doors today at Russia's request. The consultations are to take place in the evening German time, as the German Press Agency has learned from diplomatic circles.

Rebels led by the Islamist group Haiat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) took control of the Syrian capital Damascus on Sunday night, heralding the end of Assad's rule, which had lasted for more than two decades. The ousted president fled with his family to Russia, where the government has granted him asylum on humanitarian grounds, according to the Kremlin.
