The UN Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, is optimistic about the future after the end of Assad's rule. "Today we look forward with cautious hope to the beginning of a new era - an era of peace, reconciliation, dignity and integration for all Syrians," he said. Pedersen was in Doha for talks.

The displaced persons could possibly return to their homes. Families separated by the civil war could be reunited. Those imprisoned for no reason can believe in justice again.
Pedersen acknowledged that some people are anxious and worried, but a new beginning is possible. "The resilience of the Syrian people offers a path to a united and peaceful Syria." He called on all sides to protect civilians and public institutions and to maintain public order.
Pedersen is a Norwegian diplomat. Since 2018, he has been working as a UN special envoy to unite the various groups in Syria in accordance with UN resolutions.
