On International Human Rights Day, the UN mission in Afghanistan is drawing attention to the dramatic situation of women and girls under the ruling Taliban. The Islamists, who have been back in power since August 2021, have excluded them from most areas of public life, the organization explained.

For example, women and girls are not allowed to attend secondary schools or universities. They have even recently been banned from training at medical institutes. Aid organizations warn of fatal consequences for the health of women and girls in Afghanistan. The UN recently spoke of a risk of "femicide".
"Despite the improved security situation and the decline in armed violence, there is a continuing, dangerous erosion of human rights protection, with women and girls bearing the brunt," says Unama head Rosa Otunbayeva, describing the situation in the country.
