The refugee camps in Uganda are completely overcrowded due to the large number of people from the neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Uganda urgently needs support to care for the people, said the representative of the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), Matthew Crentsil. He spoke to reporters in Geneva via video link.

Uganda is already the main host country for refugees in Africa: according to the UNHCR, it is home to 1.8 million people from other countries who have fled conflict. Since the beginning of the year, 41,000 people have arrived from the Congo, said Crentsil. 80 percent are women and children, most of whom are severely weakened.

They reported unimaginable violence in the region around Goma in eastern Congo, around 70 kilometers from the Ugandan border as the crow flies. The M23 militia is fighting against the Congolese army there. This has driven hundreds of thousands of people to flee their homes.

Uganda has already had to cut back on childcare and schooling due to a lack of funds. The authorities are concentrating on preventing outbreaks of disease, said Crentsil.
