According to the UN Children's Fund Unicef, the successes achieved so far in the fight against child poverty are in jeopardy. Many governments have cut important funds for development cooperation and humanitarian aid in an unprecedented manner.

The organization said this on the occasion of International Children's Rights Day. In addition, conflicts and climate change are threatening the health and well-being of children.

In poorer countries, around one in five children - a total of 417 million - are affected by severe deprivation, according to a new Unicef report.

Many children live on less than three euros a day

This is particularly true in parts of Africa and South Asia. The most widespread problem is the lack of sanitation. Children often have no access to a toilet. More than 19 percent of children worldwide (412 million) currently live in extreme monetary poverty. They have to get by on less than three US dollars (2.60 euros) a day.

"Children living in poverty and without healthy food, sanitation or shelter have devastating consequences for their health and development," said Unicef Executive Director Catherine Russell. The years between 2014 and 2024 show that success is possible, as child poverty was significantly reduced worldwide through political efforts during this period, she said.

Russell called on governments and companies to provide money for important services for children instead of withdrawing now. "Investing in children makes the world healthier and more peaceful - for everyone."
